The Bisti De Na Zin Wilderness area of the New Mexico Badlands is other worldly, with white clay, pink sand, petrified wood, chocolate and yellow clay capped hoodoos, deep ravines, insane rock formations, and last but not least, and perhaps most importantly, the very, very dark skies!
The Bisti De Na Zin wilderness belongs to the Native Navajo peoples that inhabit this are of north western New Mexico, and thankfully it is open to the public, until someone ruins it for everyone. We need to cherish these lands, and make sure that we leave no trace, and carry out whatever we carry in.
The dark skies of Bisti are so special, often teeming with vivid green airglow and endless compositions! At night you can hear the calls of great horned owls, and coyotes off in the distance. You can walk for miles and miles here and walk right past a hidden gold mine of compositions. Its important to carry in loads of water and be very mindful of your direction, gps is highly recommended.
During our time in the badlands we will be backpacking into overnight locations upwards of 2 miles, carrying our tents, sleeping bags, and food. Temperatures in May can dip into the 40's but nothing a few adventurers can't handle! Especially for the rewards!

Friday evening after arriving at Bisti, we will hike in, explore, and make camp in what I call the "Hoodoo Garden" where hundreds of white clay hoodoos rise from the earth ranging from a few inches to over 15 feet, with endless compositional opportunities. We will capture sunset, star trails and twilight images and can continue into the rise of thegmilky way!
Saturday morning we will rise for sunrise and likely hit the "Cracked Eggs". The days after sunrise and before sunset will be spent exploring and scouting for your next subjects for sunset, twilight and milky way!
